Rose Canyon Lake

Location Description:
Rose Canyon Lake is the only lake in the Santa Catalina District that is managed for recreational fishing. It is relatively small (6 acres), and is tucked away in a picturesque stand of mature ponderosa pines high on the slopes of the Santa Catalina Mountains. A paved road through Rose Canyon Campground leads to a small parking area a short walk from the water.
Anglers fish in the lake throughout the summer, though rainbow trout are stocked only during the cooler months of the season. Fish large enough to catch and take home generally are released in the lake about once a month from early May through the end of June, when water temperatures become a little too warm for these cold water fish. In mid-September, stocking resumes after water temperatures moderate a bit and continues for another couple of months.

Was drained and renovated
(drained and dredged) in 2002.
The lake was un-fishable for several months.
Has refilled to about half full
and has been restocked with rainbow trout.
Try Power Bait corn or cheese.
Small spinners should also do some catching.

Road closed for winter, but you can walk to the lake

The Riggs Flat is one of four man-made lakes on the Coronado. This lake is 7 acres big with a 7000 feet elevation. Trailers up to 22´ are allowed. The standard 14 day stay limit is enforced. Barrier free access.

Fished last night and this morning with my four kids, had nibbles and bites all day. Evening around 6 PM we caught two small german browns, this morning around 8 AM we caught 7 crawdads (crayfish)on our line and had fish biting. The people next to me caught two decent rainbows. Lake is supposed to restocked June 14th the people at the store said.

Took the kids ages 6 and 4. 4 different types of power bait. Caught 22 keeper rainbows and a german brown. the best bite was early between 6 and 10 am. then again after 2. If you pay attention to the bite, you will notice the schools of fish work the shore line about 3 to 5 meters out.

Rose Canyon Lake is great! My family has been fishing there for about five years and we catch fish every time. As soon as we throw our poles in the water, the fish strike. In about two hours we each have caught our limit. I think Rose Canyon Lake is by far the best lake in Tucson. And we plan to continue to fish there each year.

Got out there at about 9am after a "lovely" hike. To my surprise there was still some snow everywhere so that was nice. Wasn't getting anything early so I decided to leave at about 3pm. About twenty minutes before I planned to leave I cought a small rainbow trout. So I decided to stay a little longer and ended up catching five small rainbow trout and a seventeen inch brown trout. Really didn't expect anything that big so that was awesome.

Fished Rose canyon with 3 wt fly rod using an elk hare caddis w/ 3' nymph dropper. Had 4 hits in 1.25 hr, landed & released 1 rainbow. The access road was closed so it's a 1.5 mi hike in. Nice spot, some holdover fish, hadn't been stocked because of access.

Had alot of luck with this lake caught 3 trout in a little over a hour. THe lake got a little crowded in the afternoon and we had some kids throwing rocks in where we were fishing, but other than that I had a blast and I am going back there next week. Got the most bites off corn but also got one on a spinner.
