Canyon Lake

Location Description:
Canyon Lake is the third in a chain of four lakes created by damming up the flow of the river.
Two others, Apache Lake and Roosevelt Lake are upstream.
The fourth is Saguaro Lake downstream.

Palo Verde, Mesquite, Acacia and Ironwood, Prickly Pear and Saguaro. Brittlebrush and Hedgehog Cactus fill the country-side around the lake

Tortilla Creek and Boulder Creek flow into the Lake.
The creeks can be raging white-water torrents after major storms.
The main source of the Lake's water is from the Salt River,
which drains thousands of square miles of mountain watershed in eastern and central Arizona.

Created by the Morman Dam built in 1923-25

Bruce, I used to live in F.H. You will have to go thru Mesa to A.J. then up north from there. No quick way to the lake from F.H. There is a dirt back road that goes thru the mountains, but you will need a 4x4 and good skills to make it. Plus it takes longer then the trip thru A.J.

Alma, there is a camp ground at the lake. Call the marina for more details.

I heard some dumbass at the Canyon Lake Marina emptied a bunch of sewage into the lake a few years ago and that is the reason all the fish died. Maybe thats why Apache, Saguaro & Canyon Lake are so tough to fish the last few years. I still haven't heard an explanation from Game & Fish that makes any sense. Possible cover-up?? I've seen thousands of dead fish floating at all of these lakes. I've fished these lakes for years with huge success and now they stink "Literally". Can anyone validate why?

Canyon Lake is finished for several years as a fishery, the water is green with discusting scum and the rocks and cliffs are slimmy with algae.
Plaeasure boaters, skiers with loud horrible hip hop music blaring at top volume destroys the natural beauty of the lake.
Fished Friday and Saturday with no fish in the live well.
Try Alamo or Roosevelt for results.

Canyon Lake as far as fihsing is concerened is a waste of time and fuel. Alagae haunts the lake and the water is a greenish scum that has made all the rocks and ledges a slimmy and slippery mess.
Too many jet skies and pleasure boaters destroy the lakes natural beauty and the sound of loud hip hop crappy music puts nerves on edge.
No fish caught after two days of effort.

Always have fun fishing from boulder at this lake. Get several bites but the fish seem to have a hard time taking the bait. Tried some late night fishing. Great bite on hotdogs. Approx 10 to 12 lb carp fishing near the reeds. Put up a fun fight got him to shore then he broke my line. Great!!! its even better i forgot to bring my net and the carp stayed in the shallow water and stared at me. Finally i had enough and went in after it. The carp left and all i got was wet.

Canyon lake received nutrient inflows from side tributaries during the major rainstorms. These added nutrients should equate to increased fish health this year, and hopefully, to some decent reproduction as well.

Canyon has been producing the behemoth bass so far this year, but Saguaro is typically a close second for the lunkers.

We had a half day trip on Canyon yesterday and caught 14 bass. 9 largemoths and 5 smallies. A couple weeks ago Mike from Tucson showed me a unique way they weight jerkbaits that causes them to actually wobble sideways, which I understand is deadly on Patagonia. We caught two fish yesterday, both over 6 pounds on his presentation, thanks Mike. We also caught fish on a jig/pig, crankbait, and small plastics. Good luck.....Joe

Fished off the dock, caught nothing, no bites. You need a boat with a fishfinder for this lake. My uncles were out from Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes, who showed me some riggs I never knew about as well, nothing!

Whats with all the major lakes in Arizona having the Game and Fish Dept. and other so called "big shots," being the only ones writing the reports for the major lakes. What, are they making money off of park fees, and other BS or what?

Lake is 99-percent full at 1,662 feet. This is the state hot spot for big bass and has been the most consistent producer for weeks as storms raced across the state. Rainbow trout were stocked last week for the last time this season. Use Power Bait, inline spinners and salmon eggs. Some big bass over 10 pounds have been caught recently using trout-imitation swim baits. One angler reports catching a 12-pound largemouth bass near the boat ramp using a small swim bait fished from shore just after sunset. Another angler caught four lunker bass around four pounds each on a swim bait. Bass fishing improved last week. This lake has been the best recently for quantity and quality. For bass drop shotting is still the method of choice, either Texas-rigged or Carolina-rigged. Senkos and Westy Worms have also been catching fish. Target smallmouth with crawdad imitation lures right at dark. At night try noisy topwater lures and crankbaits near shad boils. This is also a great lake for yellow bass; jig spoons in and around balls of shad. A few walleye are being caught trolling along cliffs. Shad imitation Rat-L-Traps can be effective for walleye here. Catfish, sunfish and carp fishing are slow.

So tonight was “fun”. While taking some line I’d tore off my ultra-light over to the trashcan I heard this crazy sound that sounded like a monkey scream crossed with a pig snort. Turned around and there was a frickin javalina charging straight at me! I tore off and jumped into the back of my truck on the other side of the parking lot. I finally got him turned around by hitting the panic button on the alarm, made some dreadful echoes over the lake. :) As for fishing, well, I got a new big-game rod for one of my bait-casting reels, wanted to try it out. Well I get some shrimp out on the water. The fish are jumpin. I start getting hits, I wait, I wait. Stupid frickin fish never took it. They sat there and pecked my shrimp to pieces all night long. Seriously, left nothing but the tail on the hook. This went on until 4:30 when I finally gave in to the cold and left for home. Next time I go out there, I’m taking some little popcorn shrimp and little baby trout hooks. I’m gonna find those fish that pecked my shrimp, catch them, and turn them into crawdad bait. Bastards!

Lake is 95-percent full at 1,657 feet. Bass fishing is good in the early morning and late evening but slow during the heat of the day. Crankbaits are working well with some big fish being caught at night up to 10-plus pounds with a Texas-rigged or Carolina-rigged drop shot method. Senkos and lizard imitations have also been catching fish. Last week an angler brought in a 7.5-pound largemouth bass and a 2-pound crappie (caught on minnows). Target smallmouth with crawdad imitation lures right at dark. At night try noisy topwater lures and crankbaits near shad boils. An angler using a drop shot on a reef recently caught a 4-pound, 14-ounce smallmouth bass (along with a couple of three pounders). This is also a great lake for yellow bass; jig spoons in and around balls of shad. A few walleye are being caught trolling along cliffs. Shad imitation Rat-L-Traps can be effective for walleye here. Big carp can be caught off the shore in the recreation and beach/picnic area. Use dough bait and corn. Small bluegills are being caught in the shallows and around docks with worms.

Lake is 94-percent full at 1,658 feet. Fishing is good. Crankbaits and plastics are catching fish. Garland spider jigs and lizards are working well here. Some big fish are being caught at night. Smallmouth action can be really good right at dark; imitation crawdads work well. At night try noisy topwater lures and crankbaits. This is also a great lake for yellow bass, a member of the true bass family. Locate balls of shad and jig spoons in and around the school of shad. A few walleye are being caught trolling along cliffs. Shad imitation Rat-L-Traps can be effective for walleye here. Big carp can be caught off the shore in the recreation and beach/picnic area. Use dough bait and corn.
