Lake Pleasant

Location Description:
The "Carl" Pleasant Dam, later renamed Waddell Dam, was constructed between 1926 and 1928, creating the upper portion of the Lake. At this time it was the largest agricultural Dam in the world. The Dam stood 76 feet in height and 2,160 feet in length. At 126 feet above streambed, its elevation was 1,601 feet. It created a Lake with 3,706 surface acres of water having a shoreline of 50 plus miles. The objective was to impound runoff waters, from the Agua Fria River and the Bradshaw Mountains, for irrigation purposes. The dam was built by the predecessor to the Maricopa County Municipal Water Conservation District #1. The Maricopa County Municipal Water District, based in Beardsley, Arizona, continues to manage the irrigation system for the benefit of west valley farmers. In 1959, Maricopa County leased State Trust land and Federal land to form a park surrounding the lake. Since 1969, Maricopa County Municipal Water Conservation District and the County have maintained a cooperative relationship whereby farmers and the recreating public have realized the maximum utilization of this water

We got in around 10pm and dropped casting nets down about 40 ft ( just off the main launch) pulled a bucketfull (approx 75 in 3 casts)of chad. Dropped out by the red lights and pulled a 2 lb smallmouth right away. No more bites until about 1 am when we started getting hit by stripers. First one we pulled measured 27 inches and weighed 16 lbs. The rest ranged from 22-26 inches and wieghed from 10-14 pounds. Last catch of the night was a lm bass about 5 lbs. Oh and PS I had 24 lb test and it was snapped (Not broke) 4 times and I was the one who pulled in the 16 lb striper.

The stupendous inflows provide Lake Pleasant a much-needed nutrient shot in the arm this year. In fact, Pleasant had been on a nutrient starvation diet for many years due to the drought and other factors. This year, it is fat, sassy and nutrient-wise healthy again.
<br><br>
In fact, in a single weekend of flows down the Agua Fria River and other small tributaries, Pleasant rose to the 1,702-elevation mark, which is something it hadn't done since 1993 when the lake first filled. That meant a 5- to 7-foot vegetative ring around the lake became flooded, providing much-needed hiding, ambush and spawning cover, in addition to providing even more nutrients.
<br><br>
Pleasant is what biologists call a "closed system." Basically, it doesn't have out-flows, so all the nutrient loading this year will stay in the system. Biologically, that is great news for continued reproduction in subsequent seasons.
<br><br>
Don't expect Pleasant to return to its glory days when it was going through the "new lake syndrome," but anglers can expect this renowned fishery to significantly increase its productivity and fill creels with hard-fighting fish again

Hey everyone i just got back from Lake Pleasant and have to tell you the fishing was great. Got out on the lake about 4pm and fished till 600pm. My partner and I fished a small cove in Jackass Cove and found fish busting shad really hard. I used everything i had in my box untill i found the 4 inch Rubber jerkbaits and then we started to cook with gas. Myself and my partner landed 12 Largemouth and one very very big White bass with in 2 hours. The tip is to find were you see shad boiling and jump and fish about a foot below them. Our smallest was 2 pounds and biggest was close to 5. Well good luck and try the Cove out

We fished Humbug on the 10th and caught Largemouth on spinnerbaits, worms, and jigs and White Bass on spinnerbaits. Fished Coles on the 11th and caught bigger LM on Senko's. Some in the 3 to 3 1/2 lb range. On the 12th we fished the ABF mainly in Coles and we caught LM on Senko's, worms, and spinnerbaits. We weighed 9.12 lbs. finishing in 24th place out of 148 or 149 boats. I don't remember the names of the team who won, but they had an 11+ lb big fish and 20+ lbs to win. Congratulations to them! They did a great job!!...........LeRoy www.cybertrails.com

Went down with my g/f and another couple, arrived around 2 and fished off shore until night fall. Threw spinnerbaits along with nightcrawlers and tried those real shiners they sell in packets on the shelves. Had one bite, I left my poles sitting with ring bells wihile I fished for bass and when I came back realized the pole with night crawlers was bending and the bell was missing which must have fell in the water. It ended up breaking my line because it got caught in what I belive was a bush and I was also using an older trout pole with 6lb test not expecting any bites at all. My best guess was that it was a good size carp or catfish.

Got there kinda late in the evening but all went well! The spot we we're in was sorta shallow but seemed to have a pretty decent dropoff about 30-40 out, but the problem was that everytime we would hook one the fish is would almost instantly get hung up on the bottom. So we swithed to spilt shots for weight instead of the bell sinkers we we're using which solved the problem. Mananged to pull in a few small cats but also 2 over 5 pounds, and also something very VERY odd... I was realling in my bait and about half way in something pounded it out of nowhere and I had a fish on, it was a white bass!! on catfish bait!! Must of been because I was reeling it in very fast and must have mistaken it for something else, OH WELL! Over all pleasant has not been too dissappointing for catfish the last month or so.. although it will slow down here shortly when it starts getting colder....

Wasn't too bad tonite, got there and it was very windy but managed to find a cove somewhat out of the path. I was in the south end, somewhat by the 10 lane on shore. I managed to pull in 3 cats, all under 3 pounds and a weird treat which was a 4 pound striper. Not bad for 2 hours of fishing.

Water level is at 1,661 feet (58-percent full). Water is being released at 2,900 cfs. The topwater action is phenomenal through the morning hours. Anglers are reporting topwater success using Ricos, Spooks, and jerkbaits. Aside from topwater, the best technique for catching largemouth bass is the drop shot. Fish deeper (20-35 feet) during the heat of the day and shallower (5-20 feet) during dusk and dawn. Jigs, Texas-rigs, and Carolina-rigs, are also working well. White and striped bass can be most easily had when chasing shad on the surface but spoons are also producing some fish. The marina, Castle Creek, Jackass Cove, and the Agua Fria are good places to target these fish. The catfish bite is good and several catfish are being caught in 10 to 30 feet of water. Crappies are being caught under lights at night and on minnows during the day. Sunfish have moved near shore and can be easily had on worms, especially near boat ramps. This is a great opportunity to take a kid fishing.

Water level is at 1,671 feet (67-percent full). Water is being released at 2,200 cfs. The topwater action is phenomenal at times. If there is a breeze rippling the surface, you can often catch fish on topwater throughout the day: if you can stand the heat. Try inside coves at first light. If you don’t see boils, you might try another cove. Anglers are reporting topwater success using Ricos, Spooks, and jerkbaits (soft and hard plastic). Aside from topwater, the best technique for catching largemouth bass is using drop shots. Fish deeper (20-35 ft) during the heat of the day and shallower (5-20) during dusk and dawn. White and striped bass can be most easily had when chasing shad on the surface but spoons are also producing some fish.  Water level is at 1,689 feet (85 percent full). Water is being released at 600 cfs. Most largemouth bass can be found in about 15-30 feet of water. Currently, the best technique for catching largemouth bass is the drop shot. Top-water baits, jerkbaits, and crankbaits are working well during morning and evening hours. White bass and striped bass are being caught most regularly in Coles Bay, Agua Fria, and Castle Creek. Spoons, crankbaits, and shad are working well for whites and stripers. It is also a good idea to keep a top-water bait rigged if boils should erupt around you. The catfish bite is good and several catfish are being caught in 10 to 30 feet of water. Sunfish have moved near shore and can be easily had on worms, especially near boat ramps.

Water level is at 1,691 feet (87-percent full). Water is being released at 500 cfs. One angler fishing at night using a crappie light and live minnows reports catching 25 crappies and 15 whites: all take home size, adding “Oh what fun.” Another angler reports catching catfish, crappies, stripers and white bass at night consistently for five weeks on live shad caught at the lake, adding, “They are hitting real light, so jig your live bait and be ready, if not, you will miss it.” Most largemouth bass can be found in about 20-30 feet of water during the day but shallower during dusk and dawn. Anglers are having success using Senkos, drop shots, and lizards during the day. Topwater plugs, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits are working well during morning and evening hours. White bass and striped bass are being caught most regularly in Coles Bay and Castle Creek. One angler reported catching 18 stripers in Castle Creek. Crappie lights can yield a large mixed bag of fish this time of year during nights with little moonlight. The catfish bite is starting to pick up. Several catfish are being caught in 10 to 30 feet of water. Sunfish have moved near shore and can be easily had on worms. There have been no reports of crappie.

Water level is at 1,691 feet (88 percent full). Water is being pumped into the lake only to maintain the lake level that should remain steady until water is released in mid May. There are still some largemouth bass on beds but most have finished spawning. Those that have finished spawning can be found in about 20 feet of water. Most anglers are having success in the northern reaches of the lake using Senkos, drop shot, lizards, and tubes. Topwater plugs, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits are working well during morning and evening hours. Two big largemouth bass were caught last week, including a 9 and 15 pounder. White bass and crappie are being caught most regularly within the Agua Fria closure and Castle Creek. Several striped bass catches were reported from Coles and Humbug. Crappie lights can yield large, mixed bag catches this time of year during nights with little moonlight. One angler fishing the Agua Fria Arm (accessed off Table Mesa Road) reports catching 60 one-pound crappies in two nights of fishing, plus an assortment of largemouth bass, white bass and even a couple of striped bass: live shad worked best. The catfish bite is starting to pick up. Several catfish are being caught in 10 to 30 feet of water. Sunfish have moved near shore and can be easily had on worms.
