FishinAZ.com is part of a network of outdoor sites in Arizona to provide anglers everywhere a complete fishing resource. Southern Arizona Bass fishing is our major theme, however we will also cover Northern Pike, Walleye, other Bass and all the other fish found in Southern Arizona and all over. While Bass fishing is probably the most popular of game fish Northern Pike are one of our favorites and are a challenge to catch as well.

Horseshoe Lake

Location Description:
The Horseshoe Recreation site is available for camping (14 units), camp trailers, picnicking, fishing and boating. Like Bartlett, it is open year-round. This lake is the more difficult lake to get to of the two on the Verde River. The lake also experiences major fluctuation by the Salt River Project in the summertime due to the fact that water supply needs of Valley residents increases. SRP has been known to nearly drain the reservoir in summer.

Another amazing story this year is the filling of Horseshoe and Bartlett lakes on the Verde River: multiple times. The Verde River didn't just rival the flows of the mighty Colorado River, it surpassed them many times this year.
<br><br>
Bartlett actually experienced a decent influx of water last year, and the past three years has had good bass reproduction. Last fall, anglers at Bartlett were routinely catching 1- to 2-pound bass. That strong age-class of bass should now be 2 to 3 pounds. This year, Bartlett may be the best lake in Arizona to offer high catch rates of line-stripping, medium-sized bass.
<br><br>
Although both reservoirs are full, Horseshoe will be gradually drained into Bartlett to keep it full as water is drawn out for irrigation and other purposes. Bartlett should still be full going into the fall-winter season. Horseshoe will likely be down to just a small pool or be drained by the end of the summer. It will, however, act as a shad, crappie and bass nursery for Bartlett.

I just came back from a week camping trip up to Horseshoe Lake. The lake appears to be at least 3/4 full. I don't know why some have reported travel problems. It clearly states that the road is not paved and I manage to get my heavily laden unmodified 2WD Chevvy Berretta up there 3 or 4 times a year. You have to take it slow and careful, but no-one said it was an interstate! Oh, and watch out for rock falls. I don't fish but there were several others who seemed to be having success on the Verde River between the dam and the Mesquite camping ground.

Lake is empty, a minimum low-water pool exists directly in front of the dam and is a good bet for bass and catfish at this time. The end of the boat ramp is 26 feet out of the water. Upstream from Horseshoe Dam is an unlimited harvest area for all game fish. The deep pool below the dam is known for producing flathead and channel cats. The Colorado pikeminnow and the razorback sucker are endangered and must be released immediately.

Lake is being drained and is 3-percent full. The end of the boat ramp is 22 feet out of the water. Upstream from Horseshoe Dam is an unlimited harvest area for all game fish. The river above the lake is fishable now, and is good area for channel catfish, large and smallmouth bass. The deep pool below the dam is known for producing flathead and channel cats. The Colorado pikeminnow and the razorback sucker are endangered and must be released immediately. Currently SRP is releasing 500 cfs below the dam until the reservoir is drained. Once drained, bass and catfish will be concentrated in the pool immediately in front of the dam.

I took a trip with my boyfriend to Horseshoe Lake (or trying to!) and I find it hard to believe that there is not a single sign that tells you about the road condition. We almost ruined our car. It is an undriveable road, 4 WD vehicles should be the only ones allowed on this road. We turned back halfway. But there are signs for the speedlimit 25Mph, which is totally ridiculous. You have a hard time driving 10 miles per hour. Thank you, Birgit

Lake is temporarily holding water at 30 percent capacity. The boat ramp is 7 feet in the water. In a recent fish survey largemouth bass from 1-3 pounds were caught in the upper end of the lake. The water is very clear and fish will be visible on beds. Upstream from Horseshoe Dam is an unlimited harvest area for all game fish. The river above the lake is fishable now, and will be a good bet for large and smallmouth bass in the next few weeks. The deep pool below the dam is known for producing flathead and channel cats. The Colorado pikeminnow and the razorback sucker are endangered and must be released immediately
